How to apply for SMARTSTART 1

SMARTSTART 1 applications would please prepare the following documents  for upload on the application portal (only PDF files accepted):

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation:
    please describe, why you would like to participate in the program and how your career development could benefit form the program
  • BSc degree certificate:
    Original, if German or English; in all other cases you must provide a certified translation in German or English
  • Transcript of records:
    Original, if German or English; in all other cases again a certified translation in German or English
  • Two reference letters
  • English language certificate
  • Declaration on correctness:

How to apply for SMARTSTART 2

SMARTSTART 2 applicants are invited to crossover research between a theoretical and an experimental lab. They must prepare a project proposal and make contact to potential mentors BEFORE filing an application. To identify potential mentors please refer to the list of SMARTSTART Faculty members. The project proposal, which you need to submit, requires the signatures of both potential mentors. Thus it is advisable to make contact and discuss your project idea and the proposal in due time before the application deadline.
Note: at least one mentor must belong to the SMARTSTART Faculty.

Here is a list of documents you are requested to upload on the application portal (only PDF files accepted):

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation:

  • BSc and MSc (if applicable) degree certificates:
    Original, if German or English; in all other cases you must provide a certified translation in German or English
  • BSc and current MSc transcripts of records:
    Originals, if German or English; in all other cases please provide again certified translations in German or English
  • Two reference letters
  • English language certificate
  • Project Proposal, signed by both mentors
  • Declaration on correctness:

How to apply for the program

Applications can be filed on our application portal, which will open in January. You will be requested to register on the application portal. Then you will be able to generate your application. Once you are registered, you can login any time to proceed your application until you submit it.

The application portal is open during January and February each year.
