How to apply

You will be requested to register at our application platform to generate your application. Once you are registered, you can login any time to proceed your application until you submit it. Applications must be completed and submitted before the end of the application phase!

Please note, students can participate in either the first or the second component of the program. The program components are not consecutive.

Before applying, you should identify and contact your prospective mentor(s) from the SMARTSTART faculty.

Upon application, the following documents need to be provided:

SMARTSTART 1:

Students are still enrolled in their Master's during the program

  •  Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation:
    briefly describe, why you would like to participate in the program and how your career development could benefit form the program
  • B.Sc. degree certificate and transcript of records:
    Original, if German or English; in all other cases you must provide a certified translation in German or English
  • Proof of English language proficiency:
    e.g. language certificates
  • Further documents: (if available)
    e.g. publications, participation summer schools, extracurricular work (student jobs)...
  • Declaration on correctness:

  • Two reference letters:
    Please download the form here. Letters of reference are to be sent directly by the referees to .

 

Applicants are responsible for the receipt of the reference letters at the Coordination Office before end of the application window. They will receive a message upon receipt of a reference letter.

 

SMARTSTART 2:

Students will have completed their Master's degree when starting the program

  •  Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation:
    briefly describe, why you would like to participate in the program and how your career development could benefit form the program
  • Project proposal:
    In no more than 1.200 words describe the project you are intending to execute. Please use the template provided here. The perfect project implies crossover research between a theoretical and an experimental lab. The project proposal requires the signatures of both potential mentors. Thus it is advisable to make contact and discuss your project idea and the proposal in due time before the application deadline. Note: at least one mentor must belong to the SMARTSTART Faculty.
  • B.Sc. degree certificate and transcript of records:
